Enclosed and Edge-Sealed Vacuum Bagging

Terminology

Two vacuum-bagging arrangements were given distinct names based on the boundary of the vacuum enclosure.

Enclosed Bagging

The laminate, laminating base and supporting structure are placed completely inside a vacuum bag, which is then sealed. This was later also referred to as closed bagging.

The solid acrylic base with wooden support can use this arrangement, provided the whole assembly fits inside the available vacuum bag.

Edge-Sealed Bagging

The vacuum-bag film is cut open and sealed directly to the perimeter of the laminating base using butyl sealant. The larger modular A3 acrylic base was designed around this arrangement so that the complete base did not need to fit inside a bag.

Practical outcome

Enclosed or closed bagging has been used with considerable success. Its principal constraint is that the complete base must fit inside the available vacuum bag.

Edge-Sealed Bagging proved too difficult to seal reliably and is not the preferred working process. The term remains useful for describing the alternative arrangement, but the conversation did not establish a successful repeatable edge-sealing procedure.

Editorial notes

  • Butyl acts as the perimeter seal; it is not treated as structural glue.
  • Neither method is assumed to be inherently reusable or single-use.
  • Alternative names proposed in the conversation—Full-Bag, Whole-Bag, Butyl-Seal and Butyl Edge Bagging—were not adopted.
