Sealing Cured Carbon Without Sanding

Context

The proposed finishing process consisted of applying a final brushed epoxy layer to repair imperfections, optionally adding a vinyl decal, and applying three coats of clear acrylic lacquer. The open question was whether the cured epoxy needed a full 400 -> 600 -> 1000 sanding sequence before the clear coat.

Decision and outcome

The process was named Sealing Cured Carbon.

Sanding was ultimately skipped because it required too much time for insufficient benefit. The clear acrylic lacquer was applied without the full sanding sequence or the proposed spot-sanding workflow.

Advice considered

The response explained that clear coat can add gloss but does not flatten raised defects, brush marks, runs or dust nibs. A shortened alternative was proposed:

  1. Inspect the cured epoxy.
  2. Spot-sand raised defects with approximately 400 grit.
  3. Optionally make a light 600-grit pass.
  4. Remove the sanding residue.
  5. Apply two or three clear coats.

This "bump knockdown" process was considered but not adopted.

Editorial notes

  • Hycote clear acrylic lacquer should not be described as clear-coat epoxy spray.
  • Sanding to 1000 grit does not itself create a glossy finish; gloss comes from the final coating or subsequent polishing.
  • Very fine sanding may provide insufficient mechanical key for some coatings. Surface preparation depends on the selected clear coat's requirements.
  • Compatibility and adhesion between the cured epoxy, any vinyl decal and the acrylic lacquer were not tested in the conversation.
  • Cleaning with unspecified alcohol was suggested but not adopted.
  • No measured comparison between sanded and unsanded finishes was recorded.
