Preventing Neck-Weight Shift During Turns¶
Context¶
A neck weight with an extension tail running down the back swung and shifted during turns. The initial idea was to attach stoppers to the wetsuit, and the conversation explored ways to restrain the tail without adding mass or locking the neck weight to the suit.
Hardware design explored¶
The main proposal was a low-profile loop on the upper back of the wetsuit. The tail would pass through the loop so that lateral movement was constrained while vertical sliding and normal removal remained possible.
The proposed design used:
- a neoprene strip cut from an old wetsuit;
- a flat loop with rounded corners;
- enough internal clearance to guide rather than grip the tail;
- placement between the shoulder blades, adjusted to suit stretch and the actual tail position;
- adhesive attachment rather than a rigid clip.
Sewing was considered as reinforcement, but was rejected as insufficiently beginner-friendly and as an unnecessary risk to the suit. A glue-only first attempt using Black Witch neoprene glue became the intended approach, and the glue was obtained.
The application advice was to prepare both surfaces, use thin adhesive layers, join them at the specified tack stage, apply firm pressure, allow a full cure before diving, and inspect the edges after the first sessions. The tail was to remain freely removable through the loop.
Outcome¶
None of the hardware ideas was implemented. The Black Witch glue was not used for this modification.
Instead, turn technique was changed to prevent the neck weight from shifting. That addressed the practical problem without modifying either the wetsuit or the neck weight.
The neoprene keeper, stoppers and sewing therefore remain unimplemented design explorations rather than proven solutions.
Editorial notes¶
- A glue-only loop is not guaranteed to avoid peeling. Its roots could receive peel loads from tail movement, suit stretching, donning and removal.
- The response claimed that the weighted tail would be nearly neutral underwater, but its underwater weight and buoyancy were not established.
- Claims about cyanoacrylate chemically attacking neoprene skins and the exact composition of Black Witch were presented without support.
- Advice to scuff the surface or clean it with alcohol may be unsuitable for some wetsuit finishes. The adhesive and wetsuit manufacturers' instructions would take precedence if this design were revisited.
- Contact adhesive should not be assumed to be readily reversible; removal may mark or damage the suit.
- Magnets, clips, added drag, tail reshaping and detailed sewing instructions are omitted because none was selected or implemented.
